Grow: How to Take Your Do It Yourself Project and Passion to the Next Level and Quit Your Job

We are very excited to announce our first public event, a workshop at SPACE Gallery on June 15th, from 3:00-4:30. Click through on the link for details about tickets. Please come out and join us to meet Eleanor Whitney and participate in a workshop for taking your dreams about a small business and turning them into reality. We hope to see many of your friendly faces. Molly and I will be there, and it will be a great opportunity to start our Gathering of Stitches dialog!

The workshop will offer assistance and guidance to artists, crafters and creative entrepreneurs who are looking to take the first step towards sustainability and success in their fields. Starting a business from a passion project does not come with a road map to success. In her newly released book, Grow: How to Take Your Do It Yourself Project and Passion to the Next Level and Quit Your Job, Whitney enables readers to clarify their vision, set goals, create a plan, fundraise, publicize, and manage their “do-it-yourself” endeavor, whether it’s based in independent publishing, music, food, art, craft (!), activism, or community work. The book is packed with inspiration and business advice from successful, independent business owners and creative people whose projects began in the do-it-yourself spirit. On June 14th at SPACE she will lead an interactive session where participants will work in small groups to set and share projects, articulate goals and identify areas of need to find additional resources to bring projects to fruition.

Eleanor Callott Whitney is a writer, rock musician, educator, and arts administrator raised in Maine (Waynflete graduate) and living in Brooklyn. She is the author of Grow: How to take your DIY project and passion to the next level and quit your job!, which will be out June 1, 2013 on Cantankerous Titles. Eleanor writes extensively about art, culture and nonprofit management and published the personal, art zine Indulgence for 15 years, as well as co-founded the Portland Zine Symposium and has worked for the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, and P.O.V./American Documentary. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Baruch College where she learned to stop worrying and love statistical and budgetary analysis.
